Retailers can use domain name to boost online presence

Retailers hoping to establish a more significant online presence can achieve this by using a domain name.

That is according to industry expert Adrian Lawrence, the managing director of Discount Domains Ltd, who also noted that domain names have significantly fallen in price in the last decade and now stand at about £15.

However, Mr Lawrence also said that the popularity of domain names like .uk is such that they are starting to be less widely available and explained that this is partly caused by the fact that that the "whole of the English speaking world" can purchase them.

He said: "[A domain name] gives them an online presence associated with whatever name they choose - you can have the brand connected to the name," said Mr Lawrence.

"The problem is, is that so many of the domain names have gone already. The difficulty is the whole of the English speaking world [can buy them]…If you choose a name for your business, that might be unique for the UK but it could be taken by an American business.

"In this case, it's more about what names are available depending on what your business identity is".
