Retailer blames supplier after fake goods conviction
A shopkeeper from the north of England has blamed his wholesalers after being fined for selling fake designer clothing and shoes.
The Burnley Citizen reported that trading standards officers found 222 items of fake clothing and 80 pairs of counterfeit shoes at premises owned by Mohammed Ansar in the town of Nelson.
After pleading guilty to eight offences over the selling of fake goods Mr Ansar was fined £1,300 and ordered to pay costs of £664.
However, Mr Ansar's wife, Eileen, who was recently elected to serve as a local councillor, told the paper that her husband was not at fault.
In fact, she blamed the wholesaler who supplied Mr Ansar.
"The court accepted that we had bought them in good faith. There was no malice and they were innocently bought. We have never had any trouble before and we did not know they were fake," she explained.
During the court case, Mr Ansar answered "no comment" when asked if he had carried out any check himself on the goods he purchased from the wholesaler.
Trading standards officer Nick McNamara said to the paper that retailers who sold fake goods were putting the public at risk, as they could end up buying "substandard and inferior copies".
