Retail sales benefitting from good weather
The value of UK retail sales rose this year as a result of good weather, according to the British Retail Consortium (BRC) KPMG Retail Sales Monitor for June 2009.
Figures show a 1.4 per cent increase on a like-for-like basis and 3.2 per cent on a total basis compared to June last year.
The data also indicated that in-store non-food sales - including those of footwear, clothing and outdoor leisure - were boosted by a mixture of good weather and heavy discounting.
Non-food non–store sales – those made by phone, post or online – were 16.8 per cent higher than last year, also benefitting from the heat wave and clearance sales.
The BRC also noted that CD and DVD sales had been significantly boosted by Michael Jackson's death.
Other items that sold well as a result of the improved weather included sunglasses, sandals and hay-fever remedies.
The BRC recently opposed proposals to implement a compulsory charge on carrier bags in shops in Wales.
