Retail projects can help protect town centres

Retail-led regeneration will be fundamental to the survival of town centres right across the UK, it has been claimed.

According to Ian Mearns, deputy leader of Gateshead Council, local government organisations must work hard to improve public spaces and encourage retail developments in town centres.

The councillor is scheduled to appear at the British Council of Shopping Centres' (BCSC) Town Centre Environment Awards this month, when he will call on local councils to foster close ties with vendors and other private businesses in order to boost town centre investment.

The awards, scheduled to take place in London on June 17th, will recognise projects that serve to maintain the popularity and competitiveness of traditional, town centre-based retail.

Echoing Mr Mearns' sentiments, BCSC judge Andrew Dickens said: "Now more than ever, it is essential that we encourage retail-led investment to help support struggling secondary town centres."

Among the entrants for the awards are Barking Town Square, Cambridge City Council's Grand Arcade, Leicester's City Centre Development project, Merthyr Tyrdfil Town Centre Regeneration, and the Complete Transformation of Broadmead in Bristol.

Meanwhile, Dragons' Den star Theo Paphitis has teamed up with Barclays Local Business to identify some of the most-loved independent retailers and organisations across the UK.
