Retail development could transform Southport

A potential £140 million retail development in Southport could help the northern resort town to blossom, it has been claimed.

According to the Southport Visitor, the seaside town will soon be home to a 300,000 sq ft outdoor complex, similar to the Liverpool ONE shopping venue.

It is believed by city leaders that such a development would help attract leading brand names, such as House of Fraser or Selfridges to the town.

They hope that mixing contemporary retailers with Southport's already-established local traders and boutique shops will result in a "thriving town", providing benefit to the independent sector by drawing in more consumers.

Stevie Dickson, chief of the Sefton Chamber of Commerce, explained that the success of the development will depend upon safeguarding the coastal town's existing retailers.

Mr Dickson suggested that supporting retail footfall will be a major priority in the next six months but added: "We shouldn't lose focus on the medium-term goal of attracting several new retail brands with new retail space."

Last week, the Telegraph reported that retailers are joining forces to demand that the government scrap its planned increase in business rates.
