Poster campaign targets out-of-town supermarkets in Morpeth

Local traders in Morpeth have banded together to produce posters as part of a campaign to prevent the opening of new supermarkets outside the town.

According to the Morpeth Journal Live, the banners - bearing the message "Hands Off Our Town" - will be seen adorning the windows of local independent shops, which are concerned about the effect new supermarkets would have on their trade.

Both Tesco and Sainsbury's plan to build new supermarkets on the outskirts of the Northumberland town.

However, traders have expressed concern that allowing the retail giants to go ahead with their proposed developments would significantly reduce the number of people travelling to the town centre, which the paper reports is in the process of a £32 million redevelopment.

Stuart Lishman, Morpeth chamber of trade chairman, told the Journal Live: "We have decided to up the ante because we have to get the message across … that we are strongly opposed to out-of-town retail development.

"The posters will be going up in the next week or so and we hope that as many shops and businesses as possible will take them, as well as object to the two applications."

In May, Mr Lishman called for an "aggressive" stand to be taken against the out-of-town supermarket developments.

The Morpeth Herald reported that he cited the cases of Whitley Bay and Berwick as examples that the town wishes to avoid.
