Post office closures 'will hurt local retailers'
A leading business pressure group has said that the latest post office closures could have a serious impact on small companies in the UK.
The Forum of Private Business (FPB) said that plans to shut around 2,500 post offices across the UK would seriously affect a large number of small retailers.
According to the FPB, the closures will not only cause reductions in a number of important business services, but will also lower the level of passing trade that nearby retailers rely on.
Instead of rigorously sticking to rules that stipulate that 95 per cent of a postcode district's population must be within six miles of a post office, the government should look at the specific requirements of individual communities, the FPB said.
"The government's overhaul of the post office network recognises the important social and economic role that branches play in local communities," commented FPB chief executive Phil Orford.
"However, the FPB is concerned that the closures will have a detrimental effect on small businesses. It is important that, as alternatives to traditional post offices are sought, the key services enjoyed by small firms are not diminished."
