Planning officers advise against Tesco plans
Proposals to build a new Tesco supermarket on brownfield land in Port Talbot, south Wales, could have a detrimental effect on the town's high street, the council's planning committee has warned.
According to the BBC, the supermarket giant intends to build a new store outside of the town and convert its existing outlet into a smaller shop.
However, the plan has been met with strong resistance from council planning officers, who claimed that changes could diminish the number of shoppers travelling to the town centre.
The BBC cited a council report which stated that the construction of a new out-of-town supermarket would have a "detrimental impact" on the "vitality and viability" of Port Talbot's retail sector.
Last month, meanwhile, it was reported that local traders have opposed plans for the establishment of a new Tesco Express store in Watford less than six months after Britain's largest retailer had similar proposals rejected.
The Watford Observer reported that local shops are preparing to mount a renewed campaign against the planned opening.
