Pedestrianisation plans opposed by retailers
Plans to pedestrianise a popular shopping area of Loughborough have been met with staunch opposition from several local retailers.
Local councillors want to create a seating area and water feature in place of a car park in the town's Bedford Square as part of the Town Centre Masterplan, the Loughborough Echo reports.
Additionally, pavements are to be widened to improve access for pedestrians but this will reduce on-street parking.
The consultation will close on January 5th, 2009 and there will be an exhibition of the proposals in Loughborough's Market Street from Wednesday (December 10th) until Saturday (December 13th).
Many retailers are worried that a lack of available parking will drive customers elsewhere.
Andy Rowe, who owns Nikbyte Computers, told the local paper: "It will kill us. No wonder shoppers are going to Highcross with plans like this."
However, local councillors have asserted that the plans will create a better shopping environment for consumers.
