Online retail peaks in final quarter
Internet retailers and wholesalers made £15.2 billion from online sales in the last three months of 2007, a survey has revealed.
According to research by Capgemini and IMRG, the spend for the entire year reached a total of £46.6 billion, eclipsing the overall spend for 2006.
Anthoula Madden, vice president of Capgemini's UK consumer and retail team, revealed that the current internet increases may soon put traditional stores under pressure.
He said: "Online growth has proven robust and sustainable over the past year, increasing its share of UK retail from ten pence in the pound to 15p," said Madden.
"Whilst we are yet to see high streets sales decline there can be no doubt online is growing its share at the expense of bricks and mortar retailers," he added.
The overall spend of £46.6 billion for 2007 was a massive increase on the spend of £30.2 billion for 2006.
Meanwhile, further research by Capgemini has revealed that Boxing Day was the most lucrative day for online wholesalers and retailers in 2007.
