Online retail continues to grow

Internet shopping figures are at an all-time high and continue to rise, the latest report from Verdict Research has revealed.

Online spending is expected to grow by £2.4 million in the UK this year, an indication that ecommerce will be the best-performing retail channel during what is expected to be a difficult year.

According to Verdict, consumers will spend a total of £20.9 billion on the internet in 2009, a 13.3 per cent increase on last year.

Looking into the future, the market research company suggested that internet retail growth will inevitably begin to slow down.

However, it forecast that UK online sales will reach £31.2 billion by 2013, at which point it will count for ten per cent of total retail spending.

Last month, Verdict estimated that successful retailers will enjoy £3.9 billion of extra sales income over the next few years as a result of failures within the industry.

It predicted that the majority of this additional revenue will be seen in the clothing, footwear, furniture and flooring retail markets.
