Older consumers well informed about online security

Online security is well understood by older consumers, who are more clued up about protecting their personal information when shopping over the internet that any other generation.

That is according to a new survey conducted by credit protection firm CPP, which indicated that 80 per cent of the 'silver surfers' questioned said that they would look for markings on a site to prove its security.

In comparison, just 45 per cent of younger respondents said that they would take similar measures.

CPP identity theft expert Danny Harrison noted that fraud can be a big problem for those who complete online transactions and as such it makes sense to be aware of the ways to avoid it.

He explained: "Using your card online can quite easily be a way for you to become a victim of card fraud. It's surprising that young people are the ones who take most risks online.

"It's really easy to do. Just look for the padlock in the right-hand corner or your web page - this means it's a secure web page. Also look out for the HTTPS at the beginning of the web address, as this also means your card details will be protected."
