Northern Irish retailers pledge to fight Tesco plan
Independent retailers in Ballyclare in Northern Ireland have pledged to fight plans to build a new superstore on the outskirts of the town.
The local Newtownabbey Times reported that several local traders attended a planning meeting last week to protest Tesco's plans to build a new supermarket.
They explained that the out-of-town development could be disastrous for smaller retailers in the area.
According to the paper, Niall McConkey, a member of the Northern Ireland Independent Retail Trade Association (NIIRTA), explained to the Times: "Local traders are not afraid of genuine competition, but when Tesco seek to locate out of town with free car parking, there is no way that any independent retailers could possibly compete.
"We want people to understand that we are not against Tesco. We are against out of town developments which are detrimental to town centres."
Glyn Roberts, the NIIRTA chief executive, added: "This type of completely unsustainable out of town application is threatening the commercial viability of our town and village centres and would result in independent retailers closing and the loss of jobs."
Recently, Northern Ireland's Planning Services rejected Tesco's application to build what would have been the largest of its supermarkets on the island close to the town of Banbridge.
