MPs back Think Smallest First initiative

Two more MPs have signed up to the Think Smallest First pledge pioneered by the Forum of Private Business (FPB).

The initiative was started in an attempt to garner support for local retailers and small business owners in communities that are increasingly dominated by multinationals.

Its two newest signatories are Conservative MP for North West Norfolk, Henry Bellingham, and Liberal Democrat MP for Portsmouth South, Mike Hancock.

Confirming his support for the drive - which ultimately aims to ease regulatory pressures - Mr Hancock described small businesses as the "engine room of future growth for the country".

He called for a "common sense" approach to reversing the increasingly burdensome trend towards legislation, insisting that lifting restrictions would "let the undoubted entrepreneurial flair and great ingenuity of the British flourish".

Mr Bellingham weighed in by emphasising the procurement difficulties that small retailers in his constituency face from wholesalers, adding: "There is an overwhelming feeling in the sector that the government could do far more."

Small businesses make up 99 per cent of all companies in the UK, and yet they take just 30 per cent of consumer spend on the high street.
