Milton Keynes retailers protest Tesco expansion plan
Plans to expand a supermarket in Milton Keynes would put a large number of local independent retailers in danger of going out of business.
The Milton Keynes Citizen reported that the expansion of the Tesco supermarket in Wolverton have angered local retailers.
David Odell, the chairman of the local business association, said that the expansion could put a number of independent retailers in nearby Stony Stratford out of business.
"At the moment Stony Stratford is working very hard to keep the town lively, attractive, a wonderful place to visit and shop and to access various retail services. If Tesco builds this giant of a store, it is likely that the effect will be to kill our town's retail base," he explained to the paper.
"The great thing is there's something different in Stony. But if our independent shops cannot afford to continue in business because of competition from Tesco, Stony Stratford will die."
Recently, independent retailers from Denaby in Yorkshire warned that plans to open an enlarged Netto supermarket in the town were likely to adversely affect their sales.
