Mexx to withdraw from UK retail industry
A lack of consumer spending on the high street has caused fashion retailer Mexx to make plans to close its UK stores.
The fashion chain, which is based in the Netherlands, is thought to have summoned store managers for a 'fun day' in London, only to inform them that their outlets would be closing and that they would be losing their jobs.
In the meeting, held earlier this week, Mexx revealed that its UK operations would end in July this year. The chain has 61 outlets across the UK, including flagship stores on Oxford Street and in Covent Garden.
Mexx was founded in 1980 and sells clothing for women, men and children. It was acquired by Liz Claiborne, the US fashion group, in 1981 and has 61,000 employees worldwide.
Spokespeople from both Mexx and Liz Claiborne have issued no comment about the end of UK operations.
