Merseyside bridge tolls worry small firms
Local small businesses in Cheshire and Merseyside have expressed concerns about tolls that will be levied on vehicles using the new Mersey Gateway bridge.
Reports earlier this month suggested that Halton council has said it might cost as much as £10 to use the proposed bridge, which would link Widnes and Runcorn.
However, the local chapter of the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has told the Runcorn and Widnes Weekly News that the charges would unfairly penalise small firms in the region.
Its spokesperson said small companies thought that their larger rivals would be better able to absorb the extra cost of traversing the bridge.
"There is very real concern among small businesses about the cost of tolls and this was made apparent to the Gateway project team when they gave a presentation about their plans to our members last November," explained FSB chairman for Merseyside, West Cheshire and Wigan, Norman Lay.
A Mersey Gateway representative explained to the news paper that it took the concerns of small firms seriously.
He said: "We understand and share the FSB’s view that the small business community is vitally important to the local and regional economy.
"We are working hard to provide the most appropriate and affordable tolling package for everyone crossing the river in Halton."
