Mayoral candidates urged to engage small businesses

The candidates involved in the Mayoral election should be doing more to engage small businesses, it has been claimed.

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has urged the candidates to ensure that they service the needs of the capital's small retailers and other businesses to keep them in the region.

Nick Winch, London policy manager with the FSB, claimed that little had been done for small firms during the reign of Ken Livingstone and that the situation needed to be improved.

"One of the problems with the last four years is that the current Mayor hasn't been particularly responsive to small business needs," he said.

"Ken Livingston's view of business in London has tended to be seen in terms of large businesses, but the reality is that the people who create the jobs in London are actually the smaller firms."

Mr Winch added: "Small businesses want to know that their needs are going to be taken on board so that they can help deliver the new jobs that London needs."
