Marks and Spencer's provide green example for independent retailers

Marks and Spencer have been voted the UK's greenest brand, providing a shining example for independent retailers hoping to meet their eco-responsibilities.

According to a recent YouGov and Marketing Week poll, 25 per cent of marketeers identified Marks and Spencer as the company with the most impressive environmental credentials.

And the figures could be down to the company's decision to introduce a five pence charge for a plastic bag, due to come into force next month.

"[The charge] undoubtedly contributed to [Marks and Spencer's] strong showing in our survey, although the findings appear also to reveal a residual belief in the retailer's commitment to saving the environment", the statement said.

Meanwhile, despite Marks and Spencer's improved reputation on the basis of their carrier bag charge, most consumers are unlikely to welcome the introduction of a tax on the bags.

A survey by the Times revealed that most shoppers would prefer to see the removal of single-use bags rather than pay for them.
