Many retail chains could collapse in New Year
The New Year could bring bad tidings for a number of the UK's smaller retail chains, it has been suggested.
Insolvency expert Nick Hood has warned that as many as 15 firms could collapse during January 2009, the Sunday Times reported.
Mr Hood, a partner at Begbies Traynor, made his comments ahead of the last few shopping days before Christmas.
As noted by the newspaper, many retailers will be hoping to make as much money as possible during the festive season to help with their quarterly rent bills.
The insolvency specialist did not, however, name any specific companies as he made his prediction.
Mr Hood said: "I would not be surprised if between ten and 15 national and regional chains collapsed before the middle of January."
In addition, chartered accountancy firm BDO Stoy Hayward predicted that the three-week period until the middle of January is "going to be the worst three weeks for retailers in 20 years".
