Manchester businesses look to council help to thrive
A new business forum in Manchester is aiming to make the voices of local retailers heard in City Hall.
The website crainsmanchesterbusiness.co.uk reported that Cityco Northern Quarter Business Forum already boasts 35 members and the group will be looking to promote the interests of the area.
According to the site, many local retailers believe that the council has ignored the needs of businesses in the Northern Quarter and concentrated on the retail core around Manchester Arndale.
One local retailer, Darren Fraser, explained to the website: "There has been a massive investment the other end of town on Oldham Street, but nothing up here. It is time for them to consider here. They have not listened in the past. Trade is tough. Footfall needs to increase."
Cityco's chief executive, Gordon Reid, said that there were some "very good independent" retailers operating in the Northern Quarter but they needed more support to thrive.
"Manchester's USP is that it could build on the juxtaposition of a thriving retail pitch with a thriving independent retail sector," he added.
"We think, and everybody else we have spoken to thinks, there is a huge opportunity for the Northern Quarter. It could be an integral part of the city centre experience with high footfall while retaining its edge and point of difference."
