London retail sales fall

Retail sales in central London fell by 0.7 per cent in December on a like-for-like basis compared to the previous year, as shops endured their hardest Christmas since 2004.

That is according to the latest retail sales monitor from the British Retail Consortium (BRC) and KPMG, which indicated that December 2008 was the fourth consecutive month of falling sales for the capital.

However, footfall was stronger during the month than in previous times and significantly up on the same period last year - a stark contrast to the nationwide average, which dipped slightly.

BRC director-general Stephen Robertson said that the figures "could have been worse" in light of the current economic situation.

"Some retailers did have strong individual days just before Christmas but overall those didn't compensate for the dismal weeks before that," he added.

Earlier this month, the BRC claimed that the extraordinary levels of discounting by retailers in December helped contribute to the largest fall in non-food prices for over two years.
