London markets must support each other, says CGTA

The various wholesale markets which are dotted around London are an important part of the capital's culture and bring a lot to its economy.

That is according to the Covent Garden Tenants' Association (CGTA), which has urged markets to work together and improve their relationships with independent retailers, freshinfo.com reports.

Speaking at the London Markets' Symposium at City Hall last week, Gary Marshall, chairman of the CGTA, said that markets should not just be stereotyped as shopping outlets mainly used by "the elderly or ethnic communities", but should be recognised as something useful for all corners of society.

However, he asserted that there has been resurgence in consumer interest in markets recently, but support is needed to maintain it.

Mr Marshall commented: "Markets are not just a place for people to buy, they are also the perfect place to start in business - as I believe my own experience shows.

"But we are making it difficult for these small, independent traders."

The long-standing wholesaler went on to say that there are many benefits of supporting markets, particularly for councils and traders.

"For the market operator, it is about income generation. For the council, it is about regenerating town centres. For the trader, it is his livelihood," he added.
