Local traders to fight-off Tesco
Local traders are to fight proposed plans for the biggest out-of-town supermarket in Ireland, according to the Irishtimes.com.
Small local traders in Banbridge, Co. Down, believe the construction of the proposed Tesco store would lead to the loss of jobs and the inevitable closure of shops.
The developers however, believe that the 130,000sq ft development could create up to 1,500 jobs for Banbridge and the surrounding area.
Roisin McAleenan, president of Banbridge Chamber of Commerce, believes the proposed store would turn the town centre into a "retail ghost town", said IrishTimes.com.
The minister of the environment, Sammy Wilson, refused the store planning permission last year, but the planners have appealed the decision.
A Planning Appeals Commission (PAC) will review the evidence this week.
Local traders in Banbridge will be hoping the PAC listens to advice given by the Northern Ireland Independent Retail Trade Association (Niirta) that says large developments like this can have an adverse effect on a community.
