Local retailers fight plans for Watford Tesco Express
Supermarket giant Tesco has submitted plans for a new store in Watford less than six months after similar proposals were rejected by councillors.
The Watford Observer reports that Britain's largest retailer faced stiff opposition from local traders upon revealing plans to build an Express convenience store and an apartment complex in Mill End.
Fears were expressed that shops in the area could be forced out of business by the extra competition, while potential traffic flow problems were also highlighted.
According to the newspaper, however, Tesco has amended its application for the store and flats, resubmitting it to Three Rivers District Council.
Paresh Patel, owner of a local convenience store, told the Watford Observer that there would be a renewed campaign against the planned store opening.
"This is really no surprise to us but Tesco don't seem to have listened to a word we or the council said," he elaborated.
"We've already started a new petition against the application."
Last month, the Oxford Mail reported that a pair of petitions against a new Tesco Express store in the south-eastern county had been signed by 1,500 concerned residents and retailers.
