Local retailers are community 'hubs'

Local shops are one of the four pillars of the community and should be celebrated as such, it has been claimed.

According to Alan Twigg, a spokesperson for the My Shop is Your Shop (MSYS) campaign, small retailers have found themselves under increasing pressure along with pubs, post offices and churches as a result of the recession.

The MSYS initiative was launched by the Federation of Wholesale Distributors in 2004 as a means of promoting the role of independent stores to their local communities.

Commenting on National Independents' Week, which has been running through the first week of June, Mr Twigg said that all manner of promotions and special discounts are being run up and down the country.

"It's about getting people to come in for five minutes, have a little chat [and] catch up with local news, which is what you do in your local stores," he said.

"It is a little hub of community life - that's what National Independents' Week is all about."

Last week, the Confederation of British Industry reported that retail sales fell in April but suggested that the slide was one of the smallest in the past year, adding that 31 per cent of shops saw an increase in year-on-year sales volumes during the first half of the month.
