Lib Dem MP backs Think Smallest First pledge

A Liberal Democrat MP has backed a campaign which is aimed at placing small businesses at the very core of Whitehall policy.

Nick Harvey said the government should be pressured into rolling out a raft of measures which would lighten tax burdens and shield independent retailers from the expansion of major chains.

Insisting that such superstores are "squeezing the little guy out," the minister for North Devon confirmed that he is throwing his weight behind the Think Smallest First campaign spearheaded by the Forum for Private Business (FPB).

"In rural areas such as north Devon, the constant refrain is local produce is best," Mr Harvey explained. "So it is vital that we do what we can to support and protect such local suppliers and tradesmen."

Welcoming Mr Harvey's support, FPB chief executive Phil Orford said that it "adds even more momentum" to the campaign, which was launched in June 2008 and has gained cross-party support.

He added: "I am sure having an MP like Mr Harvey on board will help in getting the voices of small-business-owners heard where they need to be - in Parliament."
