Comment - 03/06/08

It is difficult to find stories about the retail and wholesale trade which are not full of gloom and doom and there is no doubt that trading out there on the high street is challenging so maybe now is the time to start looking at trying a different approach.

I can see all the ‘old school’ retailers and wholesalers quaking in their boots at the very thought of change!

We’ve always advertised in so and so magazine... We have always exhibited at this trade show... It’s all changed now, it’s not like the old days...

The internet won’t be any use to us... Our type of customers wouldn’t use the internet...

Well sorry chaps, your type of customers are already using the internet and if you are ignoring this most cost effective route to market you are only going backwards. The shows are not providing the footfall or the returns of the days of old and magazine advertising is risky and difficult to get a decent return on.

This is not just for retailers but for wholesalers as well. The on-line retail sector is the only sector showing growth at present and it is taking that share from the high street. These new entrepreneurs are comfortable using the internet as a sourcing tool and they are using it when either researching suppliers for a new business or looking for new lines for more established businesses.

The comming months are going to be a shake out period with many retailers and suppliers who haven’t embraced this new economy being forced out of the market...
