Irish shoppers look abroad for bargains

A new report has suggested that Irish consumers believe they can save money by purchasing goods abroad.

The Irish Independent reported that a new survey from Visa Europe showed that around half the female consumers questioned thought that buying goods overseas would save them money.

In particular, women from Ireland looked to buy clothes and shoes aboard, as they believe these items are cheaper outside of the country.

Interestingly, 40 per cent of male consumers revealed that they purchased things such as handbags and jewellery for their partners from overseas retailers.

A staggering 44 per cent of shoppers revealed they have previously spent over €1,000 (£797) on consumer goods abroad.

In general, consumers from Ireland revealed that they thought they could save between 21 and 40 per cent by purchasing goods from overseas sources.

What's more, 69 per cent of those who purchased items aboard reported they believed the products were better value.

Recently, Irish entrepreneur Ben Dunne revealed that he had scrapped plans to launch a new online retail operation in the country.
