Independent retailers spring up in the north-east
The north-east is becoming a hot-spot for the emergence of new independent retailers and other start-ups, experts have claimed.
According to the National Council for Graduate Entrepreneurship (NCGE), the success of existing companies in the north-east has led to the influx of new business to the region.
Laura Collins, the director of the Flying Start initiative with the NCGE, revealed that the regions close-knit network was aiding new retailers, wholesalers and other local businesses.
"Money and effort is being spent in the region to co-ordinate and support business start-ups and it's a relatively compact region," she said.
"There are five universities in that region so it means that they work very closely together and they have an established network," Ms Collins added.
Recent research by Barclays bank has revealed that the north-east saw an 11 per cent increase in the start-up of new businesses in 2007.
