Independent retailers increase online advertising spend

Independent retailers, and other online business, increased their internet adverting spend to record levels last year, new research has revealed.

According to figures form the Internet Advertising Bureau, PricewaterhouseCoopers and World Advertising Research Centre, last year's UK spending on online adverts reached £2.8 billion - a 38 per cent year-on-year surge.

Nicki Lynas, senior manager of entertainment and media practices at PricewaterhouseCoopers, revealed that the figures were proof of the continued growth of online activity.

"2007 has been another success story for the internet. The strong growth in ad-spend reflects what has been an incredible year for internet advertising in the UK."

She added: "These ad-spend figures are proof that internet advertising is big business, and it's not going to stop growing anytime soon."

Meanwhile, recent visitor figures for internet retailers over Easter could prove that the advertising is money well spent.

Hitwise research revealed that UK retailers increased their website visitors by 2.2 per cent this Easter compared with the visitors for 2007.
