Independent retailers boycott Vodafone
Independent retailers from across the UK joined forces on Friday (July 11th) to protest Vodafone's plans to cut margins for mobile phone top-ups later this year.
Reports suggest that as many as 5,000 independent retailers from all over the country decided to boycott selling Vodafone products last week in protest against the proposed one per cent cut in commission, due to come into force on August 1st.
The campaign is being lead by Lancashire retailer Kevin Hunt. He explained to website convenience-store.co.uk that the move would severely impact his business.
"My margin is to be cut from 4.5 per cent to 3.5 per cent from August 1st, with no explanation. It's quite astonishing - it feels like we're being bullied.
"If we stand together we can send a message to the Vodafone board that this is unacceptable and we won't allow it."
In addition, Mr Hunt explained on his campaign's website that he was now looking at "other ways I can support the other networks".
He wrote: "From next week [I] will be giving away SIM cards for the other networks to Vodafone customers, in an effort to persuade them to switch."
