Hornby buys die cast model maker Corgi
UK brand leading model railway maker Hornby continues its' expansion with the purchase of Corgi, the makers of die-cast model vehicles. Corgi is one of the oldest and most renowned brands in the collectibles has been bought for £7.5m.
The Corgi brand was created by the Mettoy Company of Northampton which first started to produce colourful, pressed metal toys in the 1930s. The first Corgi models appeared in 1956 and covered British-built saloon cars of the period such as the Ford Consul, Austin Cambridge, Morris Cowley, Vauxhall Velox, Rover 90 and Hillman Husky were among the first to be produced. Each model sold for 3/- (15p).
This aquasition follows the recent purchase from of the Airfix brand and its' parent company Humbrol in November 2007. Hornby also produces the highly succesful Scalextric slot car racing brand.
