Hampshire traders fearful of Sainsbury's supermarket plans

A consultation has been launched over plans to build a new Sainsbury's store in Bishop's Waltham, Hampshire, after it emerged that local traders strongly oppose the idea.

The Southern Daily Echo reports that around 12,000 houses and local businesses are being informed by the retail giant of its plans to redevelop a site near Abbey Mill.

According to the newspaper, the high street traders have expressed concern that the new store will squeeze small and independent retailers out of business.

Max Whitehand, regional development executive at Sainsbury's, was quoted as accepting that there is opposition to the plan from traders.

He suggested: "Supermarkets compete with other supermarkets and a new Sainsbury’s store would help to keep more shoppers in Bishops Waltham."

However, the consultation is likely to engender strong opinions from the local townspeople and traders in the area.

Meanwhile, councillors in Milton Keynes have this month rejected Tesco's proposal for it to double the size of its supermarket at Wolverton.

The decision came following pleas from small retailers and business groups for the council to protect local trade.
