Green shoots talk dismissed by SRC as 'premature'

Scottish retail sales have put a dampener on talk of a mounting economic recovery as they recorded their largest fall in nearly nine years.

According to the Scottish Retail Consortium (SRC), like-for-like sales were 1.2 per cent lower in May 2009 than during the same month in the previous year and also trailed those seen in the rest of the UK.

Like-for-like non-food sales fell by 5.7 per cent last month, a significant drop-off from the relatively strong two per cent increase that was recorded in April.

Clothing and footwear saw sales fall back below their relatively strong Easter position while furniture and floorcoverings remained subdued, although outdoor living products and toys performed well thanks to the sunny weather.

Richard Dodd, head of media at the SRC, warned: "Talk of the green shoots of recovery is clearly premature.

"Scottish sales growth slumped in May confirming our fears that April's strong figure was a blip that wouldn't be sustained."

Last month, SRC figures for April indicated that retail in Scotland was performing better than the UK average.
