Government plans welcomed by independent retailers
Plans to help protect town centre retailers from new developments have been welcomed by independent businesses in Suffolk and Essex.
Earlier this month, the government revealed plans to protect high streets by forcing councils to consider the impact on the vibrancy of towns before approving new out-of-town commercial development.
The East Anglian Daily Times has now reported that local retailers have thrown their weight behind the plan.
Bury St Edmunds' town centre manager, Steve Peters, said the plan was "not before time".
He told the paper that it was vital that the government did everything in its powers to try to protect the "sustainability [and] vibrancy" of town centres and said that independent retailers would help.
However, Paul Smith, a cabinet member at Colchester Borough Council, said that it was also important to force developers to make new projects attractive for small retailers.
"If a new shopping centre is set up, developers sometimes want as much as 25 year leases, guaranteed by banks," Mr Smith added.
"For small businesses that is very difficult, compared to larger ones like WHSmith or Burtons - but if they can't get into central areas, independent retailers are at a disadvantage."
