Government looks to improve Cornish infrastructure
The government has unveiled a package of funding designed to try to improve transport links in Cornwall.
Transport minister Rosie Winterton approved a £34 million government contribution to infrastructure work in the south-west of the county.
The money will go towards a £44 million development scheme which aims to encourage growth in the region by improving transport links.
As part of the plan, a new dual carriageway linking the A30 to new housing and employment areas will be constructed, as will a road between Redruth and Camborne.
"Good transport links are an essential part of any plans to boost an area's local economy, so I am delighted to see that this scheme is on track to gain a final approval," the minister explained.
Minister for the south-west, Ben Bradshaw, added that the infrastructure improvements were "a major boost to regeneration in the area and will bring wider benefits to the Cornwall economy".
However, one Cornish wholesaler said that the scheme was unlikely to improve the situation for many local businesses.
Rod Baker of wholesale company Bags2Keep* said that successive governments "have tried to bring industry to the Camborne/Redruth area" but that the plans had always failed due to transport difficulties.
Mr Barker said that improvements to the A303 would help wholesalers in the area more. He said: "Now there is a road that really could benefit us all by upgrade."
