FSB calls for support for local retailers
The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has urged the government to continue to look at ways it can support local retailers across the UK.
As part of its Keep Trade Local campaign, the FSB is urging the government to look at as many ways as possible to help small local retailers during the economic slowdown.
While the FSB said that it welcomed recent comments from communities secretary Hazel Blears about altering planning laws to protect town centres from out-of-town developments, it added that the government should also be looking at reducing parking charges, improving business relief rates and slowing the rate of post office closures.
"Small businesses and independent retailers are at the heart of our economy and local communities, creating growth and jobs. They must be sufficiently supported," FSB trade and industry chairman Clive Davenport explained.
"Encouraging statements from politicians are of course welcome but they must be backed up with concrete actions.
"Politicians, both locally and nationally, can make a difference by putting in place transparent and fair planning and procurement policies."
Recently, the Forum of Private Businesses said that the government should always consider the impact on small companies of any new legislation.
