Fears Swansea PO closure will harm local shops
Councillors in Swansea have raised alarm bells over the pending closure of one of the city's post offices, saying it could have a negative impact on local businesses.
The Post Office recently confirmed plans to close the Lone Road facility in Clydach as part of a UK-wide cull of unprofitable branches.
But councillors Roger and Paulette Smith have responded by voicing their opposition to the move, insisting it will have far-reaching consequences for residents and businesses.
As well as making life more difficult for elderly people, they note that any reduction in footfall prompted by the closure would impact negatively on the trade of surrounding businesses.
The councillors insist that customers would increasingly be drawn to the larger Clydach High Street, leaving independent retailers around the parade struggling to survive.
Speaking to the Swansea Evening Post, they concluded: "Closure of the Lone Road office would leave a big hole in service provision and access to post office services in the area."
