Essex residents warned about counterfeit goods
Trading standards officers from Essex are warning residents to be wary of counterfeit goods when shopping at local markets and car boot sales.
The Epping Forest Guardian reported that council officials issued the warning after a number of fake hair straighteners were seized at a recent market in the area.
A spokesman for the trading standards department explained to the paper that buyers needed to remain vigilant, as counterfeit goods are "designed to look like the real thing".
"If you are unsure whether an item is genuine, examine it closely to check the quality and look out for spelling mistakes on logos, labels and packaging."
The spokesperson added that the most commonly counterfeited goods were designer clothing, jewellery, perfume, cosmetics, CDs, DVDs and computer equipment.
County council trading standards cabinet member Roger Walters concluded to the publication: "Counterfeit goods are usually poor quality imitations, and could even be dangerous. Counterfeiting is a serious offence, so don't give your cash to criminals."
In August, a man from Dorset was sentenced to 16 months in prison after he used his dead son's name to sell fake goods on eBay.
