Empty shop study 'out of date'
A survey which identified High Wycombe as the British town with the most empty shops has been blasted as "out of date".
Commercial property firm Colliers CRE recently conducted a study indicating that 23.6 per cent of retail units in the town are empty and that it had seen the largest rise in vacancies across the UK between 2006 and 2008.
But according to This is Local London, a local business leader has claimed that the true proportion of vacant shops in the town is closer to five per cent.
Melanie Williams, of the High Wycombe Town Centre Partnership, told the website that the Colliers CRE study had only considered 14 other towns in the UK.
By including locations such as London's High Street Kensington and Oxford Street to come to its conclusion, the study was also "completely unbalanced", she added.
"The town partnership strongly disagrees with the findings of the Collier CRE survey," Ms Williams said, concluding that empty shops are "a concern for towns nationally not just Wycombe".
Last week, the Mirror claimed that the town centre of Holyhead in Anglesey, Wales has the highest number of boarded-up shops; 39 per cent.
During a five hour sojourn around the mains streets of the town, the newspaper reports seeing just 30 people, few of whom appeared to be shopping.
