Eco concerns important to shoppers

Small retailers and their wholesale suppliers could boost trade during this difficult time by playing up the environmentally-friendly sides of their business and products if new research is to be believed.

According to a study compiled by Empathy Research on behalf of TalkingRetail.com, some three quarters of shoppers feel that energy saving measures are more important than they were six months ago.

What's more, the research indicated that 40 per cent of consumers feel more inclined to reduce their carbon footprint.

This is something being reflected in their shopping habits, with 39 per cent admitting that they take more consideration of environmental issues than they did before the credit crunch.

The new research comes after retailers were encouraged at the end of last year to improve their environmental performance or risk slipping behind competitors once some semblance of normality is restored to the sector.

Lee Walker, of Sheffield-based retail project management specialist Barlows, also expressed fears that many retailers that have pledged themselves to promoting greener trading standards will struggle to maintain their resolve as economic conditions worsen.
