eBay asks EU to look at online trading rules
Online auction site eBay is set to lobby the European Parliament over what it claims are outdated trading rules.
The BBC has reported that the site will claim the current rules restrict consumer choice as they limit cross-border trading online.
To try to get its voice heard, eBay is planning on forming a coalition of online traders lobbying for change.
eBay's head of EU liaison, Paloma Castro, explained to the broadcaster: "Entrenched manufacturers want to continue making money as they did in the 1950s, but the business models have to adapt for the new economy."
When it launches its Call for Action paper, eBay will ask the EU to look at regulatory framework covering things like distribution agreements, trademark rules and service and consumer provision.
"At this stage we just want to raise awareness with consumers that they aren't getting the best deal," Ms Castro said.
"Currently it is estimated that online shopping puts 17 per cent of savings in the average household basket. Looking at these rules could make those savings even better."
