East Lothian Council launches local shops initiative

East Lothian Council has launched a campaign to encourage both residents and visitors to shop locally.

Labelled the Shop Local campaign, the focus of the initiative is to support the independent retail sector throughout the towns and villages in the area, stv reported.

Plans have also been formulated to promote the campaign in Edinburgh in the hope of convincing the capital's residents to shop outside of the city.

Councillor Paul McLennan was quoted as saying: "The council is keen to maintain vibrant and attractive town centres for visitors and residents, and our diverse range of independent retailers are a vital part of this."

"The Shop Local marketing campaign is an excellent opportunity for traders to take part in Shop Local, add value for their customers and also use the promotion to help ease them through the current economic doldrums."

Among the ten reasons the council list for why local shops should be supported are the creation of jobs, the retention of distinctiveness and the fact that local shops value their customers more.
