Dream of being own boss can 'blind people' to business difficulties
The dream of being your own boss can "blind people to some of the realities of how difficult it is to set up a business," business advisors have said.
The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has warned entrepreneurs not to get caught up in the desire to go it alone if they are not aware how difficult running a small firm can be.
Prospective independent retailers and business owners are advised that while enthusiasm is very important when launching a startup, it cannot replace good knowledge.
"Most people's reasons for doing it are because they are really passionate about what they want to do. It’s kind of a lifestyle choice" an FSB spokesperson said.
"You have to make sure that you really understand what you’re getting into before you do it, no matter how enthusiastic you might be or how much you might want to be your own boss."
Barclays Bank research from March this year revealed that more businesses had started in 2007 than in any year since their records began in 1988.
National statistics from August 2007 showed there are around 4.5 million businesses in the UK in 2006, small businesses accounted for 99.3 per cent.
