Domain name important for small firms

Small companies including independent retailers should choose short domain names in order to boost traffic to their websites, it has been suggested.

According to StartupCo, a snappy and memorable domain name is an ideal way to improve the exposure of smaller firms.

John De Groot, the managing director of the company, claimed that other methods of improving traffic for retailers included choosing a domain name similar to that of the business or a trademark product.

He said: "If the website is promoting the name of the business, then [use] a name that is the same as the businesses' name. If it is to promote a product, then consider a domain name that is the same as the product name.

"Keep the domain name as short as possible," he added.

Meanwhile, new domain name registrations reached 10.7 million during the first quarter of 2007, underling the growth of retailing on the internet among independent companies and their larger counterparts.
