Diversity essential to high streets' retail futures

The Association of Convenience Stores (ACS) has insisted that the retail future of high streets lies in diversity and sustainable local development.

The organisation's comments come after the publication of new government planning policy guidelines which it believes could threaten the future of community retail centres.

James Lowman, ACS chief executive, said that possessing a diverse range of retail stores "underpins a successful community" and that government alterations to planning policies could threaten such a balance.

He added that the future of high street diversity lies in the support of the government.

Mr Lowman said: "Planners need the skills, clarity of guidance and resources to put in place and work to sustainable local development plans that take into account current and future retail needs."

A final decision of policy protocol is expected to be made by the end of this year.

Experian recently released research that stated 80 shopping areas nationwide were at "considerable risk of failure".
