Couple reveal joys of independent retailing
The owners of a thriving independent shop in Oxfordshire have revealed the joys of not being part of a major chain.
In an interview with the Independent, Chinnor Mini Mart bosses Baljit and Sarjit Bains explained that running their own retail business gave them the freedom to raise their children.
They said that they were delighted when they were able to purchase the leasehold on a shop that also included the flat above.
"Living over the shop meant that one of us could always be with the children despite working long hours from 6.30am to 9pm," Mrs Bains explained to the paper.
"This was essentially a lifestyle decision fitting employment around family life."
Being independent also meant that the couple were able to pick the wholesalers they wanted to do business with, rather than be tied to one through a long-term contract.
While this was "obviously a positive", Mrs Baljit said it also proved to be problematic when they started out.
"Few wholesalers would give us meaningful credit when we started," she added.
Now, the couple run a successful business, rent out the flat and own a large house in the village. Despite their success, the pair are keen not to overstretch themselves by starting a chain of shops.
"That wouldn't match our lifestyle," Mrs Baljit concluded. "We see the business in terms of generating revenue until we retire."
