Consumer confidence plummets, hitting retail spending
Consumers are planning on cutting back their spending, a new report has warned.
Figures released by the British Retail Consortium (BRC) showed that consumer confidence has dropped 12 points in the last year and is now at the lowest level since record began.
According to the BRC and Nielsen, the fall in consumer confidence can be attributed to worries about inflation, interest rates, job prospects and a reduction in personal spending power.
In particular, the report showed that people were planning back on spending on non-essentials like clothes, footwear, furniture and new technology.
BRC director general Stephen Robertson explained: "With one in five people saying they have no spare cash, the highest ever recorded by this survey, customers are telling us they are cutting back on spending on all sorts of non-essentials.
"It's clear we are seeing the effects of customers' concerns about the future and about their own levels of debt."
Mike Watkins, the senior manager of retailer services at Nielsen, added: "Our survey reveals that 55 per cent of people ranked inflation as their main concern during periods of economic downturn while 39 per cent said high interest rates. Unfortunately they are being hit with both at present. This has caused significant unease among consumers."
