Commission inquiry not doing enough for small retailers
The Competition Commission's inquiry into supermarket supremacy needs to go further to help small retailers, experts have argued.
According to the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), the investigation has failed to take account of the effect of large chains on local independent businesses.
Clive Davenport, the trade and industry chairman of the FSB, claimed that the Commission should be looking at the wider issues regarding the relationship between large companies and local retailers.
"The Competition Commission has consistently failed to understand the value to consumers of small independent shops," he said.
"The remit of this inquiry was far too narrow. Supermarkets are forcing small shops out of business in many areas of retailing, not just groceries.
"People up and down the country can see that we are losing our small shops, but this report does little to solve the problem," Mr Davenport added.
National companies' stranglehold on small companies could also have a damaging effect on specialist local wholesalers and suppliers.
